REPORT ON THE WORKING OF THE MINIMUM WAGES ACT, 1948 FOR THE YEAR 2001
PREFACE
Fixation of wages can not be
left to be determined entirely by the interplay of market forces. It was with this objective of protecting
the less privileged strata of the society from the exploitation that Government
of India enacted the Minimum Wages Act, 1948.
The Act provides for fixation / revision of minimum rates of wages in
sweating employments by invoking the authority of the State.
The Labour Bureau has been
bringing out an annual report on the working of the Minimum Wages Act, 1948 with
the objective of providing information on minimum wages fixed / revised in
different scheduled employments in Central Sphere, States and Union Territories. The present report pertains to the
year 2001. The information is
compiled on the basis of the annual reports received from the Chief Labour
Commissioner (Central) and State Governments and Union Territories. The Labour Bureau, therefore, expresses
its gratitude to all of them for their co-operation.
I would also like to
express my appreciation for the efforts put in by S/Shri Devinder Kumar, Inv. Gr-I;
V.I Sharma, Inv. Gr-II; Smt Asha Kak, Inv. Gr-II and Shri Charan Dass Computor
for bringing out this publication under the supervision and guidance of Sh.
Nitish Kumar, Assistant Director and Shri Ravi Datt, Director.
The views expressed, if any,
are not necessarily those of the Ministry of Labour, Government of India.
Suggestions for improvement are welcome.
