STATISTICS ON INDUSTRIAL DISPUTES, CLOSURES, RETRENCHMENTS AND LAY-OFFS IN INDIA DURING THE YEAR 2006
Analysis by States, Causes, Industry Groups Sectors and Months
5.1.1 During the year 2006, as many as 168 cases of Closures affecting 7,189 workers were reported. This represents an increase of 95.35 percent in the number of such cases as compared to the previous year 2005. The number of workers affected due to Closures also registered a increase of 46.86 percent during the same period. All the cases of closures were reported in State Sphere and no case of closure was reported in Central Sphere.
5.1.2 Tables-5(I) (a) to 5 (I) (g) present the number of Closures and workers affected thereby by States, Causes, Industries, Sectors and Months during the year 2006.
Analysis by States
5.2.1 State Sphere: Table-5 (I) (a) reveals that the maximum number of Closures, i.e., 127 (75.60 percent) took place in Tripura followed by 10 (5.95 percent) in Uttar Pradesh and 5 each or 2.98 percent) in Karnataka, Kerala and West Bengal. The maximum number of workers affected due to Closures were 3,681 (51.20 percent) in Tripura followed by 1,269 (17.65 percent) in Uttar Pradesh and 925 (12.87 percent) in West Bengal.
5.2.2 Central Sphere: No case of Closure was reported in Central Sphere during the period under review.
Analysis by Causes
5.3 State Sphere: Among the Cause groups, the ‘Financial Stringency’ was responsible for the maximum number of Closures (32 or 19.05 per cent) followed by ‘Lack of Demand for Products’ (7 or 4.17 per cent) and ‘Indiscipline’(5 or 2.98 per cent) to the total number of Closures respectively. However, ‘Cause not Known’ and ‘Others’ taken together accounted for the highest number of Closures 118 (or 70.24 per cent) and workers affected (4,445 or 61.83 per cent) respectively under the ‘Non Monetary’ Causes.
Analysis by Industry Groups
5.4.1 State Sphere: Table- 5(I) (c) reveals that the maximum number of units Closed i.e., 143 (85.12 percent) of the total number of Closures were alone only in the “Manufacturing Division” (Industry codes 15 to 37) with an aggregate of 6,386 workers (88.83 percent) to the total number of workers affected during the year 2006.
5.4.2 Central Sphere: No case of closure was reported in Central Sphere.
Analysis by sectors
5.5 State Sphere: Table-5 (I) (d) shows that all the 168 Closures, affecting 7,189 workers were reported in the Private Sector.
Analysis by Months
5.6 State Sphere: Table- 5 (I) (g) shows that the maximum number of Closures, (104 or 61.90 percent) occurred in the month of November followed by (17 or 10.12 percent) in February and (13 or 7.74 per cent) in July during the year under review.
